For those who love to travel with goals of photography opportunities, bird watching, tramp and/or fishing, the Big Bend National Park is an attractive vacation spot for any of these hobbies and interests.
Within the park, there is much variety to explore as you will find mountain terrain, as well as desert and river areas.
Big Bend National Park in Texas is home to more than 450 bird species, a few of which are the tiny little ground dove, the cactus wren, the roadrunner, the painted bunting, the black vulture and the turkey vulture.
Since the temperature can vary as much as 50 degrees from sunup to mid-afternoon, various birds and animal life are active during whatever part of the day that the fluctuating temperature is right for their species.

Other than in the higher elevations, Big Bend is too hot for comfort during parts of the summer. It has also been known to be 93 degrees in February in Presidio, with 5 inches of snow showing up six days later, so visitors to the area need to be aware that there can be extreme weather changes and to be prepared for that possibility.
Visitors to the park generally plan to enter through the North Gate, cross Tornilla Creek, then go to the Park Headquarters for maps and brochures so they will have in hand information about what to see within the Park. From there they can decide where they want to go, depending on their main area of interest, between the beautiful scenery, sportfishing spots, bird watching or animal exploration and photography.

The Park Headquarters is at about 3800 feet high, followed by a gradual climb to Chicos Basin. As the elevation changes, unlike vegetation and dissimilar types of wildlife will be seen astatine the various elevation levels.
Mornings can be the best time to explore the high desert before the sun is too high (and too hot). Caution is advised when visiting the desert area, with the need to be prepared with enough water and to heed the advice non to wander too far. The extreme temperatures have previously proven to be fatal if going even a few hours without water in the excessive heat. Hikers need to be especially sure to be well prepared with sufficient water and noesis of the terrain of this desert. From July through October, there may also be some rain later in the day for a bit of relief from the extreme desert heat.

There are tramp and packing trails set up to see main areas of interest in the desert. Many hikers use packing guide services that provide trips in the park, as these are professionally done for safely navigating the desert area.
For those who want to avoid the extreme heat, temperatures vary a great deal between the desert and the mountains in Big Bend Park.
In the Chicos Basin, gorgeous sunsets can be enjoyed in the evening.
